THIS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER IS INTENDED TO INFORM YOU ABOUT UPCOMING DIRECTIONS, CHOICES, AND TECHNICAL DECISIONS CONCERNING THE MOTOR RACING LEGENDS SERIES.
Welcome to the third Motor Racing Legends technical newsletter. We welcome comments, suggestions and pointers for areas that should be covered in future newsletters: eligibility@motorracinglegends.com
ELIGIBILITY
INTRODUCTION
We’re pleased to finally share the first specific technical bulletins for certain car models. These will form the basis of our technical checks for upcoming events.
These initial bulletins cover the Jaguar E-Type and Shelby Cobra in Pre-’63 and Pre-’66 specifications, as well as the Ford Cortina Lotus and Lotus Elan. These, and all specific updates going forward, will be available on the new dedicated page for this, under the ‘Marque-Specific’ tab: motorracinglegends.com/technical
More bulletins are currently being drafted and will be communicated to you in the coming weeks.
OUR APPROACH
The work we’ve begun, from which these first bulletins have emerged, is based on extensive discussions and active collaboration over the past months between various organisations: Goodwood, Masters Historic Racing, and Motor Racing Legends.
In parallel, we’ve engaged in a regular dialogue with preparers and engine specialists to understand current practices and to identify what measures we should and could take to prevent the current drift we’re seeing in car preparation and the associated rising costs.
OUR PHILOSOPHY: CONTINUITY, SIMPLICITY, RELIABILITY
The philosophy guiding this long undertaking can be summarised in three words: continuity, simplicity, and reliability.
CONTINUITY
We have no intention of revolutionising a system that, until recently, was entirely satisfactory. We believe that FIA Appendix K must necessarily remain the undisputed foundation of all technical and sporting regulations governing our events. However, in recent years, it may not have sufficiently kept pace with the evolving trends and mindsets that currently shape the paddocks, and it likely warrants further clarification.
SIMPLICITY
The aim of these bulletins, all based on period homologation sheets and Appendix K, is to offer a simplified reading of these documents. Such documents can be tedious to read and can lead to interpretations that fall outside the regulatory framework. Photos or diagrams may also clarify certain points.
RELIABILITY
Finally, beyond slowing down the ‘arms race’ and development at any cost, we wish to promote the reliability and longevity of engines, and thus reduce associated costs. This is why we have deliberately chosen to include certain elements in these bulletins that fall outside the scope of Appendix K and homologation sheets, but which promote reliability and should help reduce maintenance costs between each event.
These elements primarily concern the legalisation of electronic ignitions, which will be paired with regulated engine speed limits, the authorised fitting of dynators for Period E and earlier cars, the authorisation of oil coolers, and the regulated installation of brake cooling ducts.
GUIDELINES
All items covered by the bulletins attached are as we speak in accordance with Appendix K and our own regulations, there are numerous items shown which are not acceptable by our standards or by FIA HTP standards.
ELECTRONIC IGNITION & REV LIMITATION
– A specific and across the board list of REV limitations used by all promoters
– Equally, the use of a MSD ignition box 6-ALN would allow the enforcement of the said REV limitation
– We are confident that we can all agree that the use of an MSD ignition box provides for reliability and enhancement to a standard inner distributor setup, through lower rev range spark enhancement and the fact that it stabilises the signal and spark
DYNATORS
For enhanced reliability, we would support permitting alternators/dynators on Pre-’63 cars, replacing dynamos.
OIL COOLERS
For heavy cars sporting brake discs on the rear differential, we are considering the allowance of oil coolers outside of period specification to allow for temperature management.
BRAKE DUCTS
We have so far focused our Bulletins on practices that have gone too far. Our recommendations are:
– Feeding hole must be part of the front body through radiator intake or for the cars proven to have used additional ones underneath (Cobra 289), not modifying lights location or such to accommodate,
– Air feed must be routed through a single pipe/boa,
– Cooling must primarily focus on the calipers, as the seals should be the focus,
– Equally and while the rooting ends at caliper, it can distribute air to the disc surface,
– No enclosed disc brakes unless documented (GT40 specific, as an example)
Please note that Technical Scrutineering Notes covering other models are being circulated to our scrutineering team as we detail and research the specific bulletins that will accommodate those cars in the future.
These will be discussed later, once they have reached a sufficient level of accuracy.
If you have any question, please feel free to reach out: eligibility@motorracinglegends.com
FIA RECOGNITION
Finally, we wish to emphasise that these bulletins have also been submitted to the FIA, and we are very hopeful that they will be approved and annexed to Appendix K as early as 2026.
GENERATIONS TROPHY: DRAFT TECHNICAL REGULATIONS
As recently announced, the sporting regulations for the Generations Trophy are now available on our website. The technical regulations, link below, have been drafted with the aim of limiting preparation and development costs as much as possible, and of promoting car reliability.
Generations Trophy – Regulations
On the Friday of the inaugural event at Silverstone GP, 17th October, we’re running a test day and will have a dynamometer available. This will allow us to measure the performance of the various cars and adjust our regulations for the 2026 season.
2025 EVENTS
We look forward to welcoming you at our upcoming events: Silverstone Festival, and our pre-event test; the MRL Club exclusive Goodwood test; Spa Six Hours; MRL Navarra Historic, and the member-exclusive test there; and MRL Silverstone GP, with its member-exclusive test.
